West Cascades National Scenic Byway

Visitors to the West Cascades National Scenic Byway follow along four great rivers through timeless forests, to discover adventures and renewal along the way.  Traversing the western spine of one of the country’s premier mountain ranges, the Central Cascades, the Byway comes very close to the headwaters of the Clackamas, the Santiam, the McKenzie and the Middle Fork of the Willamette rivers, each of which flow into the Willamette River, the 12th largest river the United States.  The Byway can be driven in one day, as a scenic alternative to Interstate 5, between the Portland-Vancouver and Eugene-Springfield metro areas. The Byway may also be experienced over multiple days, affording the traveler time to “dig deeper” to explore the range of small and medium-sized communities of Estacada, Ripplebrook, Breitenbush, Detroit, Idanha, Marion Forks, Blue River, McKenzie Bridge, Westfir and Oakridge.  The relaxed pace of travel on the Byway is underscored by the ever-changing backdrop of lush forests, towering old-growth fir trees, snow-capped volcanic peaks, spectacular waterfalls, peaceful lakes, cascading rivers, beautiful wildflowers and a riot of fall colors.  Recreation opportunities abound, from fully developed viewpoints and visitor orientation centers to miles of hiking and cycling trails and miles of river open to fishing and paddling.
