Town of Jacksonville

Founded in 1851 during the gold-rush, Jacksonville is a National Historic Landmark. The town offers a wide variety of events for visitors. There’s a celebration of Chinese New Year in February. You can take in an outdoor concert at the Britt Music Festival and see characters dressed in Victorian costumes walking downtown in the summer months. Meet the pioneers in October – costumed characters provide a cemetery tour as they retell and re-enact events from “their” lives. Winter is a lovely time to visit when the entire town is decorated in white lights for Victorian Christmas, complete with the town crier, carolers, roasted chestnuts and horse carriage rides. There are walking tours, trolley tours and Segway tours. Step back in time and tour the Beekman Bank and home. The rare Gentner’s Fritillaria flower can be found in the native woodlands immediately surrounding Jacksonville and is usually in bloom in April. The old Jackson County Courthouse is now home to a historic museum showcasing many of Peter Britt’s photographs, paintings, furniture and exibits on gold mining, railroads and early settlers of the region including the Chinese and Native Americans.

The quaint brick and wooden buildings of this historic town now house boutique shops, restaurants and many fine lodging establishments. Jacksonville is a hidden gem in the Rogue Valley, and just a short day trip from other area attractions such as the Applegate Valley wine country.
