Spirit Lake

One of the enduring features of Mt. St. Helen’s 1980 eruption, Spirit Lake serves as a reminder of the devastation of the blast. Once a destination for outdoor recreation and camping, after the eruption, Spirit Lake became a toxic mess of forest debris and volcanic gases.

A forest of lifeless trees still floats on its surface, a brutal reminder of nature’s force, but the lake has healed biologically.  Fish were first seen in 1993, and today, the lake is once again a popular tourist attraction bringing to life, the reality of the massive Mt. St. Helen’s eruption.
