Rogue-Umpqua River Scenic Byway
The Rogue-Umpqua River Scenic Byway, “A Passage for the Ages,” illustrates the importance of the river corridor as it connects the inland valleys and coastal communities that have shared goods and services over the centuries. The byway story is the story of the Umpqua River as its flows create a wonderland of picturesque cascading waters, giving way to varied classes of rapids and then widening to slowly meander to the Pacific Ocean. Enjoy a kaleidoscope of changing seasonal colors, a feast of natural beauty through sights and sounds, as the ever-changing river affects its surroundings; the 66-mile journey through the valleys of the Coast Range exhibits varied terrain and land uses, local flora and fauna, and diverse communities along the way.
The Rogue-Umpqua River Scenic Byway is dedicated to preserving the intrinsic qualities of the route for generations to come. By designating these 66 miles as a byway, a primary goal is the protection of the often fragile environment and history, through awareness and education. The byway offers many opportunities to visit historic districts, buildings and sites. Art galleries and learning centers display local cultural, geologic, agricultural and natural history. The River’s story is a rich history of exploration, settlement, transportation and trade by people who contributed their energy and ingenuity to create communities and enterprises along the Passage for the Ages.
