Oregon Trail / Barlow Trail, Rhododendron Leg

This is one of the most accessible, year-round access points for the historic pioneer Barlow Trail.  This 2.5-mile section that meanders through the Zig Zag River canyon connects the Mt. Hood villages of Rhododendron and Zig Zag .  Along the route you can see glimpses of the wild Zig Zag River, wildlife, wild huckleberries and mushrooms (in season), and numerous streams.  Parking is available at several points in the first 1/2 mile of the trail before it is blocked off to all vehicular travel.  This is an easy sloping trail that delivers a natural, historic experience for all ages.  Its location in the Village of Rhododendron provides easy access to food and water.

Walking a historic pioneer trail offers many things to people of all ages.  It allows people to connect to days of old, ponder the challenges of our ancestors and appreciate the grandeur of nature, and teaches our children the importance of preserving our environment.  This is the perfect venue because it is appropriate for all ages, including those who need to carry young ones.  This venue blends historical, cultural and experiential tourism.  If you’re looking for a more challenging experience there are jump-off trails into the Zig Zag Mountain area that offer incredible views (Castle Canyon Trail).  For anyone who wants to trace the footsteps of early pioneers, this is the section of the Barlow Trail you will want to experience.
