Mt. Rainier Glaciers

With 27 glaciers emanating from a single point, Mt. Rainier has one of the largest glacial systems in the world. Visible from car, trail, or from the park visitor center, Mount Rainier’s glaciers stretch 35 square miles, shrouding the 14,410-foot dormant volcano. Watch morning break upon Emmons Glacier or hike the Carbon Glacier trail to see one of the ice masses up close.

The most impressive glacier is Emmons Glacier on the northwest flank of the mountain. The Nisqually Glacier is the best-known and most studied glacier in the nation. The Carbon Glacier has the largest measured thickness and volume. Each has a unique characteristic and story about discovery and their scientific value.
