Mary McCrank’s Dinner House

  • 2923 Jackson Hwy, Chehalis, WA 98532

Mary McCrank, who was born in 1900 in Vancouver, BC, couldn’t cook when she started what later became a charming Chehalis restaurant known for good homemade food. In 1935, Ms. McCrank bought the Dutch Mill Tavern, along busy Highway 99 and named her business Shamrock Inn to honor her Irish ancestry. She learned to cook and created a cozy, pleasant atmosphere for weary travelers to enjoy home-cooked meals and she eventually changed the name to hers, Mary McCrank’s. Customers sought out her restaurant, in part because of her friendly, outgoing personality as she roamed among the tables treating customers like cherished family.

Mary McCrank passed away in 1984, but her spirit lives on with new owners Gerd and Jeri Schopp who bought the Chehalis landmark in November 1998. They continue to cook several of Mary McCrank’s all-time favorite recipes, such as fried chicken, chicken fried steak, mulligan stew and oatmeal soda bread. They changed the menu to add prime rib, barbecue ribs and chicken, halibut, salmon, oysters, prawns, and scampi.
