Early in the 1900s Sherman County wheat farmers nailed a shoebox top with the name “Camp Sherman” to a tree at a fork in the road to guide others.  To escape the dry summer heat they came to camp, fish and relax along the banks of the Metolius River.  Some of the same farmers soon began purchasing land and began to settle year-round.  The Camp Sherman area offers some of the best recreational opportunities available in Central Oregon.  There are well over 100 hikes available within a 20-mile radius, and biking trails that will take you from Suttle Lake through the Metolius Basin and all the way up Green Ridge.  There is fishing available on the Metolius River as well as Big Lake, Suttle Lake and many of the smaller lakes scattered through out the mountain range.
